5-22 What are the causes of carbon deposits in the oil circuit and head of screw air compressors, and how to repair and clean them?

Four factors—air filtration, temperature, lubricant quality, and overuse—affect carbon deposit formation in air compressors. Carbon deposits can be cleaned using special agents, with soaking times varying based on instructions, followed by rinsing and blowing with compressed air.

Answer:
(1) Four factors that affect the formation of carbon deposits:

      1) Air filtration. Dust particles sucked in with the air make the oil thicker, increasing the time of the oil oxidation reaction, thereby accelerating the speed of carbon deposit formation. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to the correct installation of the air filter element, and if it is found to be damaged during cleaning, it must be replaced.

     2) Temperature. Obviously, the starting temperature of oxidation of lubricants of different grades and types of oils is also different. Long-term operation of air compressors in high temperature areas will accelerate the oxidation of lubricants. For compressors with water coolers, it is recommended to use treated or impurity-free cooling water to prevent waterway blockage.

    3) Lubricant quality. The lubricant provided by the air compressor manufacturer will not cause carbon deposits within the specified service life. At present, there are many channels for purchasing lubricants, and their quality is inevitably different. Some users use alternative oils. Carbon deposits in these cases are not uncommon.

    4) Lubricant overuse. After the lubricating oil exceeds the prescribed service life, the service life can be appropriately extended according to the appearance of the lubricating oil. Some users continue to use the lubricating oil after the color changes (turns black). In this case, the air compressor will not be able to operate in a very short time due to carbon deposition.

(2) Methods for repairing and cleaning carbon deposition in the oil circuit and the head. Carbon deposition in the oil circuit and the main engine can be removed with a special cleaning agent (carbon deposition cleaning agent or bearing cleaning agent). The main engine can also be cleaned without disassembling it. The method is to place a small main engine directly in a container and soak it. The rotor should be rotated several times during the soaking process; for large main engines, the outlet pipe and oil pipe can be sealed and then poured into the cleaning agent for soaking. The soaking time shall be based on the instructions of the cleaning agent, generally 8~12h. Some cleaning agents are highly corrosive and the required soaking time should be strictly observed. After soaking, rinse with pressurized water and then blow it clean with compressed air.
